British Collection

In 1992, the stock of the British Council library was donated to the City of Helsinki and incorporated into Rikhardinkatu Library, where it now forms a section of its own, called the British Collection.  It is situated under the beautiful skylight of Rikhardinkatu Library on the sixth floor (the ground floor counted as the first floor, according to the Finnish custom), or, on the fourth balcony.

The British Council donation still forms the foundation of the collection. Obviously obsolete titles have been discarded and new titles purchased. British Collection consists of

  • Fiction (prose, poems, plays) with special sections for crime, horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and romance
  • History and research of British literature
  • Non-fiction books that deal with the United Kingdom and Ireland: history, society, culture, tourist guides, art…
  • English linguistics, philology, and language courses with sound recordings
  • Audio books
  • VHS- and DVD-programs, of which a BBC-series of Shakespeare’s plays on VHS is worth mentioning
