Artists' books

Since 2000,  Rikhardinkatu Library has acquired a collection of so-called artists' books.  The idea or form of a book is the basis of an artists' book. Artists' books differ from each other greatly, but they all challenge, protest or ironize the established idea of a book's contents or appearance.

There are 300 artists’ books in Rikhardinkatu's collection, both Finnish and foreign pieces of art, both unique and copies of a limited edition. In addition to the artists’ books themselves, there are books and other information on artists' books.

Artists' books are on the first floor (‘2nd floor’ in Finnish), next to the reference library.  Every now and then there are specific artists' book exhibitions in the Rikhardinkatu Library.

The lable of the artists’ book collection, designed by the graphic artist Teemu Lipasti, depicts the Mesopotamian library god Oandes.

You can examine the collection also on the internet, in Rikart Web Gallery. There you can view pictures of the works and read information on the artists, who often themselves tell about their works. There are also information on the artists’ book exhibitions and interesting links.
