PRESENTATION
The Future Library – from bookshelves to cultural meeting points - an urban exchange hub.
Knowledge and education are fundamental cornerstones in the development of our urban societies. In order to enable our societies to utilise knowledge and innovation for the benefit of us all it is essential that knowledge is exposed, shared and made attainable as well as useful.
All over the world libraries – or houses for books – houses for exchange of knowledge - are currently evolving and adjusting their role in our cultural landscapes and information carried societies. The transition is from static knowledge archives - where fiction and non-fiction books and the like are made available for the public - to infinite urban cultural hubs that in an ongoing process are able to gather and spread activities in the communities they are a part of.
How do we address the need of futuresecure innovation and the libraries as living urban meetingplaces.
The inspiration for a development strategy regarding future libraries could well be taken from the processes that campus areas - as knowledge based areas - currently are undertaking.
In order to secure a holistic approach to the future planning of urban areas JUUL | FROST Architects have developed a model that develops campus areas based upon four requirement categories: urban, physical/functional, social and learning requirements. As a whole these requirements cover all the needs that university users daily are confronted with.
A strategy to secure the future urban library
As a strategy for developing the libraries of the future with a minor adjustment in the requirement strategies:
Is the space between buildings and libraries interaction with the surroundings.
- Physical/functional requirements
Examines volume structures and the types of buildings and functions that exist in and around libraries
Are related to the social life that takes place in and around the libraries
Is the way libraries exposes, arranges and shares knowledge.

Umeå City Library, Director
PRESENTATION
City of Umeå, 115 000 inhabitants. Selected by the EU’s Council of Ministers of Culture to be The European Capital of Culture 2014.
During the years 1982 – 1996 I worked as a school librarian in an upper secondary school. Before databases were used in Swedish libraries we developed a database with references to articles from magazines, selected by the teachers. We also designed a method; Seven steps to knowledge, for teaching information skills.
Since 1996 I’ve been working as a library director. During the years 2000 – 2007 I was chairman in the steering group for the EU financed project Library 2007. One result of the project is award-winning library cooperation between the six municipalities that is called the Umeå region.
Two of the international awards is United Nations Public Service Award for “This award is given in recognition of the exceptional contribution of City of Umeå, Library 2007, Sweden towards improving the effectiveness, efficiency and quality of Public Service” and by European Public Sector Award for “An exciting and highly innovative approach to improving access to cultural services within the city and its surrounding region”.
Today I spend most of my time planning for a new city library in a building designed by Snöhetta, Oslo, Norway. Since 2007 I’m vice chairman in for the Swedish Library Association.

Pablo Riquelme
Kuudes Kerros Oy, Interior Architect
An individual driven by curiosity that brought him to Finland seventeen years ago.
The same curiosity towards visual culture and all related social expressions continue to inspire him after many years of living in the north. A continuous search for something new lead him to carpentry, set design and advertising before co-founding the design agency Kuudes Kerros Helsinki in 2004.
Has been involved in various projects relating to the retail and service environment, visual conceptualization and design. A continuous thirst for learning has inspired him, to continue his studies at the International Design Business Management programme in the Aalto University, where he has focused on strategic innovation and design. Completing these studies included for example research on applications for Nokia mobile technologies and the creation of user scenarios establishing the value of experience-driven innovation.
Recently took part in the creative industry fair in Valdivia, Chile in July 2010, as an invited lecturer with a particular focus on the impact of design in the development of local identity and industry, and the role of culture in regional development.
His interest towards public institutions and cultural infrastructure has recently been sparked by the involvement with the research and design project for the Helsinki City Library. He has become enthusiastic about applying the same methodology used to create solutions for retail environments, to develop cultural services in the public sector as well.
Utilising a grant from the Finnish New York cultural centre, Pablo will be exploring the possibilities of these challenging applications in New York during spring 2011.
