Policy for storing regional library materials
The purpose of the joint storage of MelMet-libraries’ materials is to provide access to culturally important and relevant materials. When materials are stored in the regional stacks, the nationwide library network is taken into consideration. Little used items are sent to national Repository Library in Kuopio. Regional stacks stores limited amount of materials, which metropolitan area research libraries store.
Library statute places certain demands for storage for the Central Public Library (Helsinki).
Literature
- domestic Finnish and Swedish fiction, which are still in demand
- literature translated into Finnish, which are still in demand
- sought after Swedish and other foreign fiction (either in original or as translations)
- domestic Finnish and Swedish non-fiction of permanent value, especially classics in various disciplines, historical materials, indexes of people and the so-called hobby books
- foreign non-fiction is stored only in exceptional cases
- “nostalgia materials” (picture books, school books etc.)
- maps are store like any other printed materials
Periodicals and newspapers
- essential domestic periodicals and newspapers
- “nostalgia materials”
Music and AV-materials
- music materials are store in the Vantaa music stacks
- essential visual recordings are stored
Local collections
- local collections regardless of the format are stored in respective city library’s collections.
Children’s and young people’s materials are store according to the same principles as adult’s materials
City libraries have their own working instructions concerning the storing procedures.
